Worth a Try
You're counting down the days
– until your due date, yes, but also until spring arrives. Whether or not the
groundhog sees his shadow tomorrow, there's more harsh winter ahead.
So how do you dress your
bulging belly? In light of her new book, Just
Try It On! – A Month by Month Guide to Shopping and Style, we
checked in with fashion expert Susan Redstone on the season's best pregnancy
style.
Must-haves
to survive winter (while still looking chic, of course):
A pendant or necklace that
you love. Style-wise it balances the bulge and keeps the focus near your face
and shoulders (great for days when you feel a bit...big).
A black dress to wear
anywhere, or a wrap dress in a cool Pucci-esque print (you can tie it tighter
or looser as you grow). The key is to buy stuff you would normally buy, but in
a maternity size.
A stylish, flat, comfortable
boot. For something trendy, go for motorcycle-inspired boots (think Frye). If
you are more classic, pick an equestrian style. Treat yourself to new ones if
your feet widen during pregnancy, as chances are they won't shrink back.
A thin dressy sweater that
doesn't add weight to your already bulging belly.
Stretch maternity cords. They
are softer and easier to move in than jeans and are great to dress up or down.
A comfy nightgown and
matching robe. A soft fabric like brushed cotton is important for resting at
home. And a gown with a cross-bust shape is perfect for nursing after you have
the baby.
Maternity
style in 5 minutes (because really, that's all the time you've got):
Susan's advice to look great
in a flash? Grab a cool maternity top (like the ones in style now for
non-pregnant women with an empire waist that are somewhat low cut to show off
your new cleavage), pair with skinny maternity-waist jeans or cords and some
cool sneakers (a slip-on pair, or those with Velcro fastenings).
And please, please step away from the sweat suits.
